Magicicada Septendecim

$125.00

This framed painting is roughly 4x6 inches in size. It was created using watercolor, gouache, ink, colored pencil, and graphite.

In honor of the year of the cicadas, I painted a 17 year cicada emerging from its exoskeleton. A cicada skin is brightly colored when it emerges. But after it’s skin hardens, it turns a dark brown.

A cicada’s life cycle is remarkable. A cicada nymph hatches after 8 weeks, falling from a tree to the ground and burrowing into a hole. While underground for 17 years the cicada taps tree roots for nourishment, molting four times. Once ready to emerge, the cicada uses it two front legs to dig out from the underground. Once above ground, the nymph climbs the tree and molts for the last time. Then the cicada is ready to mate, starting the cycle over again.
