This original painting is 8x8 inches in a brass and glass frame. It was created using watercolor, gouache, ink, colored pencil, and graphite.

This painting features the entire lifecycle of the butterfly. The top shows the eggs played on the leaf, the caterpillars growth cycle, chrysalis and finally the fully grown butterfly in the center.

The eastern tiger swallowtail butterfly is a relatively common butterfly in central United States. These butterflies lay eggs on the underside of leaves from wild black cherry tree, tulip trees, ash, or willow. Early stages of the caterpillar are brown and through the molting instars, they become a bright green with eye spots- looking similar to small snakes. The eye spots help ward off predators. Once fully grown caterpillars, they form their chrysalis with web, camouflaging in their surroundings. After two weeks the fully adult butterfly emerges, becoming a helpful pollinator in their environment.
